Jewelry Care

Storing and Handling

  • Store your jewelry in a cool, dry place.
  • Keep your jewelry in a fabric-lined jewelry case or in a box with dividers. If you use ordinary boxes, wrap each piece individually in soft jeweler's tissue or a soft bag. This will help prevent tarnishing and will keep it away from other pieces that might scratch it.
  • Apply all cosmetics, perfumes and colognes before putting on your jewelry.
  • Gently wipe off excess make-up and skin oils after each wearing with a clean, soft, slightly damp cloth to ensure that your jewelry is clean before storage.
  • If damp, allow the jewelry to air dry before putting them away.
  • Do not wear your jewelry, especially rings, when doing rough work. Even diamond which is one of the hardest materials in nature can still be chipped by a sharp, sudden blow.
  • Avoid wearing your jewelry when exercising or performing household chores.
  • Do not expose your precious jewelry pieces to salt water or harsh chemicals, such as chlorine or detergents (including swimming pools and hot tubs). These chemicals may slowly erode its finish and polish.
  • Handle clean jewelry by its edges. Avoid touching your clean jewelry with your fingers.
  • Do not subject gemstone jewelry to sudden temperature changes.
  • Consult your jeweler for the best cleaning procedure for your particular jewelry.
  • Periodically, take your jewelry to the jeweler for professional cleaning.

Cleaning

  • Dirty jewelry can be cleaned with a mild soap and water solution. Use a nub free, 100% cotton cloth or a soft brush (if necessary) to remove dirt and gently wipe the piece clean using only the soft pads of your fingers. You can also use a good nonabrasive metal cleaner (some Dip cleaners can be harmful to some metals).  Be sure to remove any remnants of the cleaner and rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  • Pat dry with a soft cloth (don't use paper towels or tissues as they might cause scratches). When dry, use a special jewelry polishing cloth to restore luster and remove tarnish.
  • If you have silver jewelry, you should polish it regularly with silver polish to remove tarnish.
